On February 26th, the Eastern European Gaming Summit (EEGS) held its free webinar on “Balkan Gaming Landscape: a Maze or Amaze?” Theme “Deep Dive in the Markets”. Prominent experts and professionals from the gaming and entertainment industry met to discuss the latest trends, developments and challenges for the Balkan markets.

The webinar was moderated by Rossi McKee, co-founder of Telematic Interactive Bulgaria and honorary chairman of the Gambling Industry Association in Bulgaria (AGIB). The discussions included contributions and comments from representatives of several Balkan countries – Angel Iribozov, Chairman of the Gambling Industry Association in Bulgaria (AGIB), Dan Iliovici, Vice President of ROMBET, Romania, Ovidiu Iosif, Managing Director of Joc Responsabil Association in Romania, Zoran Puhac from Serbia, Secretary General of the European Gambling Law Organization (EOGL) and Vasko Ilijevski, President of the Macedonian Sports Betting Association.

Throughout the webinar, speakers provided insights into the prevailing market conditions in Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, North Macedonia and Montenegro. Covering important topics such as gambling advertising, implementing responsible gambling policies and incorporating new laws and regulations into the industry, the discussions were both insightful and comprehensive. When asked by the moderator “What are the biggest challenges for gaming professionals in the Balkans?” Zoran Puhac replied: “The elections were the biggest challenge. During election time, all politicians try to find out something new to improve their image and that is the problem.” In this regard, Angel Iribozov added: “Although the politicians in between might have certain misunderstandings about other sectors, gambling always has suffered from politicians’ tax ambitions.”

At the end of the session, the expert panel discussed with the audience and provided insightful answers to a variety of questions on topics related to the total ban on gambling advertising and the key challenges faced by companies directly operating in the industry. “Our experience was that Italy imposed this total ban a few years ago and I have not seen any research on the impact of this advertising ban. However, governments are not aware of any scientific approach or any kind of research. They are purely populist… In fact, no one can provide evidence that these measures are effective.” – said Dan Iliovici in response to the question “Do you think that completely banning gambling advertising in every market is a good idea?”

At the end of the webinar, each participant was awarded a certificate of participation, recognizing their commitment to professional and ongoing development in the field.

The topic attracted great interest from the audience, who were active in the question and answer section. The speakers promised a follow-up session to delve deeper into the implementation and discussion of the upcoming changes they reported coming into force.
