Galacticare Challenge Mode (In Review) – Yurika.R

It’s hard enough to get a doctor’s appointment nowadays, even harder when the Galacticare’s hospital is in space. I’m a bit late to this party but I couldn’t cover the free DLC that came out for Galacticare last month (September). If running a hospital in space wasn’t enough fun for you then the addition of a Challenge mode will go down very well with a lot of people. In this new mode, you will feel the full unrelenting stress of managing a galactic hospital. If you thought Galacticare base game was easy, wait until you experience Challenge Mode.

In patch V1.10 you will get a load of bug, visual, and gameplay fixes alongside the free DLC Challenge Mode. This new mode can be enabled when you start any new mission or sandbox mode. If you want to experience challenge mode on a mission you will have to start that mission again, so make sure that is something that you are okay with doing. Additional cosmetics are available for those who manage to get five stars on the missions you do on challenge mode.

You can also use all career progression items in Challenge mode so it might be worth completing Galacticare‘s base game first on the standard before throwing yourself into the deep, deep end.

In this new mode, you will experience a huge patient overload, where swarms of inconsiderate patients will storm your hospital and demand assistance. Some will even be on the verge of death and will demand instance care but you might not have the facilities built to care for them which makes life for you even harder.

Time is of the essence as well as everything kills quicker in Challenge Mode. Where in the Galacticare‘s base game you could take your time, if need be, building rooms and catering for patience. You won’t get that luxury here. So, make sure you manage the situation accordingly or you could be facing a few hefty fines and a malpractice case.

If the abundance of patience wasn’t hard enough conditions can now mutate into far deadlier variant strains at a moment’s notice. Trying to make sure you have enough staff on hand to deal with patience is hard enough so how am I supposed to stay onto of researching new cures and equipment in the lab?

And on to the above, you can say goodbye to your hard-earned money. Challenge mode puts your micromanaging skills to the test when it comes to your finances as you will be burning through it relatively quickly. If it isn’t to keep up with your patient’s annoying needs and wants or paying for staff and meeting their demands you will now have to also pay full price at Baz.

Even though he won’t be handing out the freebies, he expects to pay the full amount. This was one of the hardest parts of the Challenge Mode as trying to manage your money on the things that are important when every is, you will find yourself burning more than just holes in your pockets.

Management sims are something that I do enjoy playing but like mentioned in previous reviews if they get too much in terms of staying on top of a lot of things or just feeling overwhelmed then I do start to panic and get a bit mad at the games. I mean it is in the name “Challenge Mode” but it wasn’t something I found myself playing for long periods and would have to feel in the right frame of mind before tackling a Challenge Mode scenario.

I found it more manageable doing it in sandbox mode but still felt like I couldn’t keep up at the best of times. It’s tailored for those who want the extreme side of a management sim and I can see why they have done it like this seeing as there were reviews about the Galacticare‘s core game being too easy but I did like the main game difficulty as it allowed me to enjoy Galacticare.

I still am yet to complete this Galacticare Challenge Mode (don’t even know if you are meant to). It feels more like a “how long can you last” simulation than an I can win this. I found the base game a good equal medium to difficulty level and felt like it was enough for me so to have the Challenge mode bombard me with all these new features and patience you could probably get an understanding of how the NHS feels in the UK right now.

Under staffed and underappreciated, though seeing as this is a Free DLC pack I would highly recommend giving it away and seeing just how well you can make the situation of running a chaotic galactic hospital.
